2017 has officially arrived, and many of us are already thinking about how we can reach for new heights in the New Year - individually and as a family. Establishing goals as a family is a great way to focus on positive outcomes, create accountability and strengthen confidence together.
Here are some tips to help create a realistic plan to achieve family goals in 2017:
1. Break big goals into smaller ones.
All big goals take hard, challenging work, which can prompt stress. Accomplish one thing at a time to minimize frustrations, maintain focus and build confidence for the next task at hand.
2. Start a family journal.
Even if it’s once a month, write where everyone is with their goals, what actions have been taken, and what support is needed to tackle the remaining tasks. When it’s on paper, it feels more real.
3. Establish accountability buddies.
It’s easy to let things slip when you have sole responsibility for your steps toward achievement. Assign accountability buddies to keep everyone honest and serve as cheerleaders throughout the process.
4. Create a family success calendar.
Reinforce accountability with a family calendar that features all small, actionable items that lead to progress.
5. Determine how to celebrate achievements.
Birthdays, big wins, and graduations: everyone likes to celebrate differently. And there’s no exception with goal achievements. Let family members determine how they would like to be celebrated when they reach big or small achievements. Not only will it boost confidence, it will also incentivize them to keep going.
