A new school year brings change, particularly when transitioning into kindergarten, middle school, high school or college. With vastly different structures, schedules and peer groups, it can take up to four to six weeks before your kids are comfortable in their new surroundings.
To help them build confidence and self-esteem as they get acclimated, here are five tips to consider during school transitions:
1. Sharpen their skills. No one is good at everything, but everyone is good at something. Help your kids uncover a talent they have – whether it’s academic, athletic or artistic – and help them hone it. Being good at something is always a good self-esteem boost, no matter your age!
2.Reinforce their wins.
During the first few weeks of a new school year, recognize their seemingly small achievements, like doing chores without being asked or acing the first pop quiz of the year. Positive reinforcement goes a long way in building confidence.
3.Build a positive environment.
If school is stressful for the first few weeks, make your home a place to relax and recharge. Keep the mood light and fun, and be supportive.
4.Be a source of stress relief. Change often leads to stress. To help your kids tackle new challenges, be their cheerleader! Remind them that no problem can go unsolved; encourage and help them establish goals that use of their current strengths build new ones.
5.Reach out. Your kids will have good days and bad days throughout the school year. That’s okay – no matter what, they’re learning experiences. Offer your ear and give them reminders that you’re always there to listen and talk through things.
